"Diabetes control for elderly patient"

I look after a gentleman who has got type 2 diabetes and is 100 years old. He used to take about 6 different tablets to control his diabetes, but in March this year, he had a fall and ended up in Wythenshawe Hospital overnight.

When he came out of hospital, I realised that the hospital had stopped his diabetes medication and he was discharged with only 4 tablets for other health issues.

Since coming out of hospital he’s had no energy; he falls asleep at the drop of a hat and has started to get cellulitis in his legs because there’s too much fluid under his skin. His diabetic nurse said this has happened because of being taken off his diabetes medication. He’s on antibiotics for his legs and the nurse has said that he can’t go straight back on to the diabetes tablets because he’s been off them for so long. She’s put him on insulin but she’s worried that his blood glucose levels will get too low for the insulin.

I’ve never had or heard of any problems with Wythenshawe in the past, but this has put me off going to Wythenshawe. They need to check things before they change things like medication.

I think this is an atrocious way to treat the elderly.
