"Lack of explanation resulting in an avoidable misunderstanding"

About: Telford referral and quality service (TRAQS)

(as the patient),

I attended the surgery and was processed well; eye test, eye drops optical scans, laser scan and consultation. The optician confirmed that I have the beginning of wet macular. On the yellow form (18 week form I was given) there is a tick in the box, discharged/no treatment required! This is completely the opposite of what I was told after the laser scan!

I have a number of questions I need sorting out:

1) Why was I sent to a different trust if these procedures can be done in Shrewsbury or Telford (not initially mentioned) If only someone had bothered to explain to me the reason I was not referred to Shropshire was because the waiting lists are too long. I would not have said to the consultant that I would try to get the Lucentis injections done in Shropshire.

2) If I need Lucentis (which was the suggested treatment) I would prefer it done in Telford or Shrewsbury providing the competency is in those places (now irrelevant)

3) The consultant told me that it is important that treatment is started soon (4-6 weeks)

4) Will I need to be re-assessed in Shrewsbury/Telford?

The moral of this story is simple – explain the FULL situation to the patient to avoid the misunderstanding. I am now having great difficulty in contacting the New Cross (Wolverhampton) secretary (phone not answered).
