"NHS Dentist Problems"

About: Cumberland Centre

(as the patient),

I went to see my NHS Dentist with terrible toothache, was given an examination and X-ray part of an old filling had come out and there was a hole in the side of the tooth which needs to be filled. The earliest this could be done is 5 days later I was put at the top of the list in case someone cancelled an appointment, being in terrible pain as a nerve is exposed I telephoned the Dentist the next day to ask if someone could see me today as an Emergency, NO was the answer I have to wait in excrutiating pain until next Wednesday or until someone else cancels, or try an out of hours Emergency Dentist over the weekend. I telephoned I telephoned Plymouth Community Care Dental Access Centre No they cannot help anyone who is registered with an NHS Dentist even though their own Dentist cannot see them/treat them for 5 days and they are in terrible pain which pain killers are not helping I have almost over dosed on Pain Killlers with little relief, will not help either. What do people have to doi in Plymouth when they are in this situation? SUFFER this is outragious, or as I was told pay and go Private, oh yes I can just go to the hole in the wall and draw out several hundred pounds to see a Private Dentist! ! ! If it wa that eaqsy I would have gone Private in the first place, in fact was a private patient for 32 years until I could no longer afford it. So if you are Registered with an NHS Dentist who is so busy he cannot treat you for 5 days and you are in terrible pain there is no one to help you. My Advice is DONT register and Plymouth Community Care Dental Access Centre will see you and treat you, so guess what I shall be doing De-registering so I will have no Dentist in future and can they be treated. This is like being in a Third World Country. Anyway after pleading again with the Receptionist that the pain is so bad and getting worse that I will probably commit suicide over the weekend, I have just had a call from her saying she was concerned so spoke to the Dentist and he has cancelled two patients so I can go at 5 pm tonight to have the filling I desperately need. People should not have to be put into such a situation when in so much pain I went to the Dentist as soon as the filling fell out the very next day I see the Dentist every 6 months for check ups etc this is a genuine Emergency nobody should be left in such pain and be expected to wait 5 days for treatment. Hopefully at 5 pm tonight this filling will solve the problem and I will be pain free again, even the novacane will help and give me a couple of hours relief.

Dear mollybellas

I apologise for the delay in responding to your feedback and was sorry to read of your experience in accessing dental services.

The Dental Access Centre is commissioned to supply emergency dental care to patients who do not have access to a regular NHS dentist.

The service is not able to supply emergency care to patients who have a regular NHS dentist, as their own NHS dentist is commissioned to do this and has a duty of care to their own patients and generally the remit of emergency appointments is for patients to be seen within 24-48 hours of contacting the dentist.

With Kind Regards
