"Stoma nurses need patient care lessons"

About: James Paget University Hospital

I was absolutely appalled at the care given to my mother whilst she under went stoma operation. The ward staff (ward 9) were marvellous. However the so called Specialist stoma team were extremely rude, uncaring and treating my mother like an imbecile. She was told she HAS to do her bag change, despite her telling them continuously that she cant see well. She was left in faeces whilst the stoma nurse went off to get something....3 hours later she returned and said that she had expected mum to have changed it by then. Thank God mum was discharged home and now has a fantastic stoma nurse who incidentally doesn't work for the NHS but is an absolute Godsend. She spent time with mum teaching her how to put bag on with a mirror and made us all laugh and at ease. Nothing was too much trouble and she never made mum feel a burden. Mum has now recovered but her nurse has already made an appointment for 3 months time to review her. I am not one to name and shame but if all stoma patients had an experience like my mum then it would be dreadful, please please speak to your inpatient stoma nurses as the community one is an angel.

I am so sorry to hear about your mother's experience, and I hope she is feeling recovered and is being cared for well at home. I have passed your comments on to the Stoma Care team who are very concerned and would like to make contact with you discuss this further. I would urge you to contact our Patient Advice & Liaison Service on PALS on 01493 453240 or by email PALS@jpaget.nhs.uk, so we can seek resolution and ensure this doesn't happen again.
