"Varied care for my special Granddad"

My Granddad, who is 94, had a bad fall on New Years Eve and was taken to Preston Royal Infirmary. We kept telling the doctors that my Granddad had Alzheimer’s, but they kept saying he is very confused. They said he could not eat properly and they were frightened of him choking. They said there was something wrong with his throat, but he is a man who loves his food. I kept bringing him in Chocolate mini rolls, which he wolfed down and was looking for more. The doctors would not transfer him to the Lady Finney Nursing Home until he had a brain scan. About a month after going into hospital my Granddad had his brain scan and the doctors said, do you know he has Alzheimer’s? But we knew this all a long.

The nurses on this ward were really busy and they did not have time to feed, shave or look after my Granddad properly. The date for my Granddad to go into the Nursing Home came, but unfortunately the Nursing Home had the Winter Bug and Granddad could not go. It was awful seeing him looking like a convict in the orange hospital gowns. My Granddad was eventually moved to the Rehab unit and the nurses and staff in this unit are brilliant. My Granddad looks like himself again and is really happy in his own clothes and being well looked after, having baths and shaves and being talked to like a human being, instead of a number.

The staff loved my Granddad, they say he has a really good sense of humour and is the loveliest person to look after. He never has a cross word against anyone and always has a big smile on his face. He is truly one special man. Please could you ensure that the rehab units are not closed, as many patients will miss out on this rehab care, which is very important to the patient and their families? They do a brilliant job and are such caring people. I could not believe the difference they made to my Granddad.
