I had heart failure and was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation in January.
I was referred to the cardiac specialist nurses at the walk-in centre, Sarah Briggs involved me in a 12 week pilot providing support for me and other heart patients. This was a scheme where they gave us a weighing machine, blood pressure monitor and a tablet to record our readings. These readings went straight to the hospital, if I thought at any time there was a problem I could speak to Sarah, she has been brilliant, I can ask her anything! .
When a nurse came to take my weighing machine and other things away after the pilot period I told her I felt that this was my security blanket being taken away.
Cardiac patients have also been able to take part in another pilot being run by Hayley Mills at the leisure centre. They have shown us how to exercise without straining our hearts.
These are both pilot schemes, it’s such a shame all patients cannot be given this level of support. We have found it to be great. We just hope it can carry on and benefit other people.
