"Finger operation"

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital

Very impressed with the professionalism, friendliness, helpfulness and support of all staff. Some concerns though. 1. My appointment was for 12.00 and I thought this was the time for my operation! Suggest you make clear that this is when the session starts with pre-op consultations etc and then you have to wait your turn. 2. Hand towels in toilet were just piled up on sanitary disposal unit - not very nice. 3. Given conflicting advice about consuming food and drink. Nurse A who did pre-op questionnaire said as it would be a local anaesthetic, food and drink would be OK. Nurse B, the surgeon's nurse, on giving me antibiotics, apologised for the small amount of water but that was all I was allowed because of anaesthetic. I questioned this and the nurse said definitely nothing to eat or drink. 4. In theatre, Nurse B was well covered up, even with a sci-fi type face mask, when this nurse swabbed down my right hand. However, meanwhile on my left side, the surgeon was playing with his mobile phone! In these days of hospital infections and the known number of bacteria on mobile phones, how can a mobile phone be allowed in an operating theatre? A TV in the consultation waiting area would be good. I appreciated the conversations and banter with the surgeon and theatre nurses. It helped to keep my mind off the procedure. Discharge nurse was excellent and the tea and biscuits certainly hit the spot! It feels like the surgeon has done a good job and I have not had any pain. Looking forward to having dressings removed on Thursday and seeing the final results.
