"I visited the hospital's ..."

About: King's Mill Hospital

(as a relative),

What could be improved

I visited the hospital's X-Ray department today with my wife, as our five month old baby daughter was booked in to have an ultra-sound on her skull. Quite worrying as you might imagine. I had taken the day off work to accompany my wife and child. Although we were treated very promptly, the experience was ruined for me as only one parent was allowed into the X-Ray room with our baby - hardly family friendly in this day and age! Consequently I was left in the waiting room, my only involvement being to strain to hear the occasional cry of my daughter echoing down the corridor. You are allowed both parents in for a scan during pregnancy, so why should this be any different following birth? In the past couple of years I have made many visits to the hospital, and to date I have usually been very impressed on each occasion, which is perhaps why I feel so let down after my visit today.

Your comments have been brought to the attention of the Service Lead for Radiology who is sorry that you were disappointed with this visit. Unfortunately the scan rooms are quite small and have to accomodate the radiologist, an assistant, the couch, the equipment and of course the patient and in some cases such as yours a carer as well. Our main concern is to ensure that the patient gets the very best of care within this working environment and that there is sufficient room for the assistant to adjust the position of the couch if needed.

With regards to pregnancy scans the patient is on the couch and so a carer can also be accomodated.

If you wish to discuss this further please contact our Patient Advice team on 01623 672222.
