"Dietitians Support because of cow mild intolerance "

About: Rotherham Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My little girl reacted quite badly to the introduction of formula milk. She was just breastfed until being a few months old but, due to being a very hungry baby, we introduced a formula feed just once/twice a day. The introduction of formula caused a reaction and she had periods of constipation that lasted up to nine days and vomiting after each feed. We saw our GP initially before the diagnosis of Cow's Milk Protein Intolerance was made, and he prescribed Lactulose and, when then didn't help we moved on to Movicol, The Movicol did the trick but also caused such a reaction in my daughter that we ended up in A&E with her one night in November. To cut a long story short, we saw a specialist who diagnosed potential Cow's Milk Protein Intolerance and referred us to a Dietician.

The Dietician visited us and my baby on the ward and gave us excellent advice.

We were prescribed a special formula (Neocate) which, didn't suit my daughter but an alternative (Aptamil Pepti) was suggested and has worked a treat.

I was also given advice about dairy free diets and breastfeeding - I continued to breastfeed until my daughter was 5 months old, but she took so well to the new formula that we decided to feed or solely on this and it did the trick. My daughters weight gain had been poor up until turning 5 months but she thrived on the formula and seemed to really enjoy it.

My daughter is now nearly a year old; she was discharged from the specialist pediatric clinic just this week and will probably be discharged from the Dietitians soon too.

The support of the Dietitians based at Rotherham General Hospital has been fantastic and they helped us get through what could have been a very difficult time for my daughter. Under the guidance of the Dietitians we have confidently weaned Izzie gradually on to products containing cow's milk and she is thriving; other than continuing with Aptamil Pepti 2 until she is a year old, my daughter has a normal diet.
