"Experience with Various Departments"

About: George Eliot Hospital - Acute Services

I must say that my overall experience of george Eliot thus far has been very good indeed. I have been under investigation for a rather complex and elusive ilness and have seen numerous consultants in recent years. I have come to far prefer George Eliot over other available options. I was particularly impressed with Clinical Neurologogy; and found that my Consultant was very attentive and accurately reported my symptoms in the clinical letter. Sadly, this is quite unusual! I was disappointed that the emphasis was more on "finding the right medication" than investigation of underlying causes, as I have bad reactions to most medications, and I feel that knowledge is more empowering. I do think, in particular that a more holistic approach is called for in my case, and that the right treatment -if such exists- would adress a wide range of symptoms. As it is, the prescribed medication made my numerous non-neurological symptoms much worse.. I was also impressed with radiology. I've had two MRI scans there; and the staff were very kind and dealt sensitively with my fear of needles Similarly, my recent blood tests at the hospital were the least traumatic I've ever experienced! My most recent vist was to Endocrinology. This was not so positive. I must say that I was very impressed with the Consultant on my first visit, earlier this year. However, on my follow-up visit , the department sufferered from an unexpected shortage of Consultants, which meant that my consultation was rushed. Full marks to the reception staff who explained the problem as soon as I booked in. Much appreciated! Also sterling efforts were made to mininimise the problem, by getting another Doctor to take notes whilst I waited. However this was not much use to me, as I could not be told my test results until the Consultant arrived, so no discussion of these could take place. It seems I have an underactive thyroid, and low vitamin D, and need medication for both. I would have liked to know the actual figures of test results (my GP later asked me) but the Consultant had no time to give me this info, and It not appear in the clinical letter, which was frustratingly brief. I also had other questions that there was no time to ask. The time was mostly taken up by a discussion of my food/drug intolerances, which was somewhat too one -sided , That is, the consultant expained in great detail why the peanut oil would not trigger my presumed allergy. As I do NOT have a peanut allergy , but rather severe non-allergic reactions, this was not helpful. I had previously informed the consultant that I am awaiting investigation for mast cell disorders. This is very relevant here, but I did not have chance to remind him of this, nor draw out the implications. Seeng I was dubious, the consultant told me I should "trust Doctors more" and ushered me out. I get the chance to try to talk again in 6 montths. Sadly, I find this experience unacceptable, and it leaves a very bad taste
