"Most of the nursing staff, despite ..."

About: Southampton General Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

Most of the nursing staff, despite being so obviously under pressure and stretched too thinly, were pleasant and friendly. GREAT respect is due to staff in the AMU. They really stood out.

What could be improved

Organisation, treating the patient with respect, communication, cleanliness. Appalling attitude of one consultant. Blood and pus left to dry on the floor.

Anything else?

Treatment time for my elderly father was delayed numerous times as each consultant coming on duty had a different view. He was consequently more or less starved for 4 days, with a drip to keep him going. Where's the communication?

Please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on pals@suht.swest.nhs.uk or by calling 023 8079 8498 so that we can look into the situation in detail.

The Trust has recently increased the number of matrons and housekeepers we employ. They play a key role in implementing our Patient Experience Strategy, a series of commitments to patients improve care. Priorities for 2008/09 are privacy and dignity, patient communication, patient information, admission and discharge, and nutrition.
