"I am writing on behalf of my husband ..."

About: Gloucestershire Royal Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I am writing on behalf of my husband as he is not well.

My husband attended the day hospital for a biopsy on a lymphoma in his neck. There has been lots of confusion over appointments for tests and treatment and consultations and we have been told that this has been because treatment is considered urgent. Although these muddles have been distressing we have found that staff have been helpful and kind

What could be improved

Communication between secretarial staff and consultants over appointments

While waiting for my husband in the Day Hospital I noticed lots of dust on all the rails and on the oxygen cylinder underneath the bed. The bed number was 19. I removed the dust with tissues dampened with the eco hand wash - then dried the area with dry tissues. I needed to use 6 tissues to clean the area. The bed was taken in to the operating theatre.

I also noticed the nurses cleaning the beds. One nurse cleaned the mattress and plastic pillow cover thoroughly. However another nurse cleaning another bed simply wiped the top of the mattress and did not bother to turn it over. The plastic pillow case was wiped with one wipe on one side of the pillow only

My husband was told by the consultant that he is at risk of infection because of his diabetes and the lymphoma. Surely basic cleanliness would reduce the risk of infection?

Many thanks for your comments. We are sorry that your experience was not of the standard we would expect.

We would always encourage patients or family members to raise concerns about cleanliness with ward staff at the time they are in hospital, to give them the staff the opportunity to put things right at the time.

We also take note of your comments about the different cleaning practices observed, however without more information we are not able to pursue this further.

If you would like to discuss your comments further, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0800 0193282.
