"GP failed to diagnose me for prostate cancer"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Urology Nottinghamshire County Teaching PCT

(as the patient),

For two years I have been receiving treatment for prostate cancer and a tumor in my spine which has spread. Firstly I went to see my GP because of sever back pain. I was tested for a kidney infection but it came back clear. I was also referred to a physiotherapist at Nottingham County Council through work. I feel I was not correctly diagnosed by the doctors and I continued going to physiotherapy. The doctor did no tests to check if I had prostate cancer.

My pain got sever and I collapsed. I was taken into QMC Nottingham where I had an MRI scan. They found that I had prostate cancer which had spread to my spine. A tumor was trapping my spinal cord! I had several large operations whilst I was in hospital for several months.

I now have to go to a spinal clinic every couple of months in the Urology department. I have to also see a psychiatrist because I have lost my job and can no longer play golf or tennis. I feel like I have been cheated because the GP failed to diagnose my cancer earlier. I feel like my life has been ruined just before my retirement. I am now fighting for compensation with the help of my solicitors. I have also changed doctors to Musters Medical Practice where I obtained a Patient Opinion leaflet. My previous GP has now resigned with no explanation why. I know wonder whether it is because of my mis-diagnoses.

I feel very angry that it was not picked up early before the cancer had spread to his spine. If I was in so much pain, the doctor should have carried out a thorough checkup to find the cause. This has left me with no job, no chance of taking part in hobbies and I know find it difficult to walk. I feel all of this could have been avoided if I had been cared for properly. Nonetheless, the hospital care was very good, but obviously I feel it has come too late to really prevent the cancer from spreading to my spine. I was 59years old when this happened and I feel like I have lost the last years of retirement which I was very much looking forward to.
