"Experience of spinal surgery"

About: Ninewells Hospital

(as the patient),

I was lying face down on trolley apparently, my airway moved and only one lung was being intubated so they had to put me on my back. The anaesthetic was turned down and I woke up. I heard the surgeon speaking about making the incision and repairing a cerebral spinal fluid repair using a pad of my fat.

I was terrified but because I had been paralysed I couldn't make anyone aware. I thought I was going to die and my heart was beating so fast, my bp was high as well. The whole experience was awful. I did feel pain and intense burning inside my back.

I had to go into surgery another 3 times after that. I had 5 surgeries in 9 weeks and was treated for PTSD because of it.

Good afternoon

I am sorry to read about your experience. I recognise your anaesthetic must have been very difficult and your description makes uncomfortable reading. This must have been extremely upsetting for you and everyone involved and it must have taken particular courage from yourself to have a further 3 operations.

I would welcome the opportunity to have a fuller discussion about your care. If you would find this helpful I can be contacted at feedback.tayside@nhs.net

Kind regards
