"Colon Endoscopy procedure review"

About: Royal Blackburn Hospital

Firstly thanks to all involved at Royal Blackburn nothing put praise for the NHS and staff. Arrived for my appointment on time, within 10 minutes I was with the nurse for the formalities (paperwork, questions etc). I was then taken to get changed, by the time I had my gown on the endoscopist was waiting for me at the door, I was then taken to a room for a small discussion about the procedure and any further questions or requests I may have had. I did not wish to be sedated as that prolongs the recovery time so I asked for the gas (Entonox). It is a relatively painless procedure and my preference was to take the gas option and that was the correct decision for me, although sedation may be required to relax muscles so it may not be your choice at the end of the day. The procedure went very well and the staff on duty including the endoscopist managed to find plenty to joke about (they adjusted to my personality weil). The only "pain", although more discomfort really was due to the air being blown in and this felt like a bad case of the wind. You take a few sucks of the gas and it takes the edge off, the gas though does make you a little light headed and you want to laugh. I was reminded of laughing gas and carry on films at the time. You can see on the screen your colon/bowel and it is quite interesting, they did find something white and asked what it could be? We all decided it was a piece of undigested mozzarella cheese quite funny that one. The hardest part for me was the preparation no food for 24 hours and 2 lots of laxative stuff to clear out your system beforehand. I found it quite hard trying to drink a litre of this liquid in the evening then another litre in the morning. All went well as were the results. Thank you again NHS and Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Dear Arthur

Many thanks for your feedback on your experience of our Endoscopy service, and thank-you for taking the time to do so. I will pass on your comments to the team. Also if you would like to talk through your visit to us with one of our Patient Experience team so we can understand the bits of your experience that could be shared with other teams as a way to make our services more personal we would really value this. You can either contact me (Wendy Stobbs) on 01254 734471 or email me on wendy.stobbs@elht.nhs.uk.

Once again many thanks
