"Admitted through a&e as an ..."

About: King's Mill Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Admitted through a&e as an emergency with no waiting about inreception and a very quick decision that I needed to be admitted and treated quickly. Was treated with respect and dignity at all times and kept informed on what they hoped to do and why there was a later delay in getting me to the operating theatre. Am 61 and had never been in hospital since age 4, and aws terrified. Met anaesthetist who explained options, including staying awake with epidural(no thanks). Was given adequate pain relief during my wait on WARD 7 (where the staff where fantastic) Was reassured before being put to sleep for what turned out to be a long operation. On waking on ward next morning my care was considerate and reassuring. Staff were kind but firm in their insistence that I become mobile and visit the loo as soon as I could explaining that all risks of infection reduced as they were able to remove drains, needles, drips etc and constantly atking necessary measurements and reacting as necessary. I suppose no one enjoys a stay in hospital but the staff who dealt with me gave me confidence that I was ib the hands of people who knew what they were doing and cared about my welfare. Well Done Kings Mill and ward 7. When decision made to discharge me this was effected quickly and without fuss, though they did try to persuade me to have lunch first!

What could be improved

I have to say the food is totally unappetising wit even some of the nurses wrinkling their noses as they removed lids from containers. I have to admit that I have never before seen minced beef served up as a carvable cube! Having said that I did manage to find enough edible stuff to satisfy a rather meagre appetite.

Anything else?

Just a big thanks, hoping not to see you again anytime soon but would not be so apprehensive next time

Many thanks for your kind comments which have been forwarded to the service leads for Accident and Emergency and Ward 7. The comments regarding the food provided have been passed to the relevant team.

It is very important to us that patients provide feedback, both positive and negative, as not only does it give us the chance to improve our services but the comments also confirm to our staff that they are providing good patient centred care.

Please accept our best wishes for a speedy and succesful recovery.
