On Sunday I had to go in to St James's (Leeds) A&E for some IV treatment as I'd picked up a bug and I have some complicating long term health problems. As soon as we arrived I noticed that the department was the busiest I've ever seen it.
It turned out that the reason for the high patient numbers, over and above the strain on the NHS generally, was that the Sky Ride event had closed one of the major roads and people couldn't reach LGI.
Despite the workload, the staff were excellent and in good spirits - which really makes a difference to the patient experience. Everybody introduced themselves, the Dr we had (who had been diverted from LGI - well done managers! ) was brilliant, and I was sorted and out the door within my 4 hours, avoiding an admission.
"Very good care at St James's A&E despite huge patient load"
