I had to have a laparoscopy to remove my ovaries and tubes, because of cysts that could have been cancerous. I visited the hospital several times for tests and consultations, then the op. I was due to have day surgery and had to stay in overnight unexpectedly, because of a small complication. My consultant and the surgeon and anaesthetist on the day treated me with the greatest respect and explained everything in terms I could understand, without being patronising. The nursing staff were lovely, including the nurse who gave me a big hug when I was told I couldn't go home the same day and got really upset. Thanks to other nurses who made sure I was comfortable and had pain relief when I needed it. I have particular dietary requirements, which were honoured. When it came to being discharged, this was done quickly and efficiently and staff remembered to organise a sick note for work. I would also like to thank the support staff, who did an amazing job and really made a big difference to my life over the past few months. This includes - the surgeon's secretary, who arranged the op on a convenient day, bearing in mind my particularly complicated family/caring arrangements. - the phlebotomy clinic in the Lanesborough Wing. It's incredibly busy, yet the 'crowd control' was excellent. Not only was I treated well, but I saw the receptionists and other staff exhibiting great patience and empathy with some very upset and anxious patients. I needed a blood sample for my GP as well as for the op and the clinic arranged for that to happen. And they get through a lot of tests in a short time - 34 in 40 minutes on a busy weekday morning. I counted! - the receptionist at the Day Surgery unit, who patiently went through exactly what would happen on the day when I phoned up. - the woman in charge of breakfast on Champney Ward, who gave me strawberries and clear directions on where my partner could park to collect me. I feel that everyone I've come across at St. George's has supported and helped me to get through a difficult experience as easily as possible.
"Laparoscopy at day surgery unit - excellent..."
