About: Derriford Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

Nothing about the whole experience.

What could be improved

My wife was admitted to SAU under a planned admission. The reason it was planned is due to the fact she has MS and during a visit in october she came out with a pressure ulcer. The District nursing team have been dressing the wound but it needed Hospital treatment. With this information and a letter from our GP and a phone call from the Sister of the district nursing team she arrived in SAU. There we waited for 3 hours to be seen by the doctor who could not assess her because there was no hoist available to lift her from the wheelchair to bed. 2 hours later a bed had been found on Primrose ward so after a special mattress was located and carried/ dragged througt the hospital we arrived on the ward. Upon arrival there was no sling for the hoist, a sling was found but it was the wrong type for the hoist. The time was ticking on and visiting hous were over. The sling of the correct size was then located and then the correct hoist was found but upon opening the sling it was found to be the wrong style as the patent has to be sitting in it to use it and can not be put on a patient who is already sat down and has limited mobility. The time now was 9 pm so my wife had to self discharge to get home to use our equipment at home that we are not allowed to bring in to the hospital so that the dressings had to be changed.

Anything else?

To summarise- Planned admission, admitted at 1430 and had to self discharge at 2100 as the facilitys to hoist a patient from a wheelchair to a bed were not available, why?

The reason of the visit poor nursing/ neglect that lead to pressure ulcers in October.

Will I return? I have no choice as my wife still needs surgery to put right poor nursing/hospital neglect.
