"You could smell the smoke well into the main building"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat

(as a relative),

I witnessed some staff smoking at the main entrance of Chester Wing at Sunderland Royal Hospital. This is not what I would expect to see as I was taking my four year old granddaughter for an E. N. T appointment. You could smell the smoke well into the main building. How can you expect patients to take notice of signs if some staff totally ignore them? Please respond as I would be interested in hearing what action has been taken.

Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding. Our staff are aware that no smoking is permitted on site at all - even in the designated smoking shelters (as these are for members of the public only) - and certainly this is the first time we have been informed of staff members smoking outside Chester Wing. It is possible these were care workers from nursing homes who accompany elderly patients to hospital appointments and it would be helpful if you are able to provide additional information regarding the colour and type of uniform so we can try to identify the staff group in order to send a targeted reminder of our policy. If this is possible, please email corporate.affairs@chsft.nhs.uk
