"So hard to complain"

How can you complain about a service that is free of charge? we can only be grateful but perhaps we can make suggestions? I as wife of the patient felt I needed to be on hand as much as possible. Nurses were occupied on busy wards and could not cope with the one to one help I felt was needed..Husband came in as surgical but evolved into medical. I had to insist that checks were made over and above standard procedure which resulted in admission to ICU. Care there was as needed 1-1! A different scenario would have occurred if not for my interference which could have had a serious negative result. This is in no way a complaint rather an observation. As you sit and watch the ward activities it is clear that many duties could be performed and would be of great benefit to patients, and staff, by volunteers or complimentary staff . Move the pillows, get a bedpan, alter the positioning of the bed, help to sit up, down,etc etc. I appreciate this is controversial ,because if this is needed then maybe it should be paid staff rather than volunteers but I felt many times. as a wife of the patient I could have been of more use thus allowing nurses to nurse those who needed more medical support. However many thanks to both medical, surgical and ICU staff for their kindness and support
