"Lost referral and infection risk at EAU"

About: Southport & Formby District General Hospital / Cardiology Southport General Infirmary / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

Admitted to this hospital EAU this year with chest pain and left after 12 hours with a referral to have a myocardial perfusion scan. That evening I became really sick with a bug which I believe came from my stay in that ward.

Made a complaint about the cleanliness of the ward, the poor food and the rudeness of a member of nursing staff to their complaints department but nothing can be done and I feel I was just given lip service. Two months after my referral I contacted the hospital to find out when I would have the scan to be told the referral from EAU had gone astray and would have to be referred again to the Royal Preston Hospital and this will now take place 3 months later from the original referral date!

Recently I attended an appointment in the ophthalmology clinic and now have an eye infection.

Both my mother and husband have had similar experiences with infections from this hospital in the past.

There seems to me to be a risk of catching a bug at this hospital and has made me ask my GP to refer me elsewhere in future.

We have investigated your concerns about the Emergency Assessment Unit (EAU) and written to you. In addition, a staff nurse and a catering manager have contacted you directly.

Our infection control team have investigated your concerns and found no corresponding example of the sickness bug you describe.
