"having a scan"

About: University Hospital Ayr / X-rays and Scans

(as the patient),

on arrival at ayr hospital dalmellington road I was taken into a small changing room and then was taken into a small dimly lit room, where the nurse explained to me, that I was to have a canula fitted to my arm, for injection. After three attempts, she gave up, and I was then taken into the place where the scan was to take place. Senior person there, supervised the nurse in having another go at fitting the canular. She failed once again, the senior lady then fitted it in seconds (much to my relief). The lady then connected a large syringe type thing to my canula. Turned out it wasn't needed as the first scan was a "good one". After it was over I couldn't wait to get out of the hospital. My left hand was bruised, as was expected. However later that night, my arm was feeling a bit uncomfortable I tried rubbing my arm, and found what I thought was a swelling on my upper arm, only to find the nurse had left one of those rubber band things around my arm. No apology is needed or sought after, I feel this is a case of total negligence and incompetence.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear danderson1,

While you are not looking for an apology, you certainly deserve one. The whole experience must have been very distressing. Coming to hospital for anything can be an upsetting experience on its own without all of this adding to your experience.

I will get back to you after I have spoken with the team and give them a chance to respond.

Thank you for letting us know about this,

Kind regards,

Eunice

Dear Anderson1,

I passed your post for the attention of managers in the medical imaging service, one of whom tried to contact me yesterday (unsuccessfully) but I hope to catch up with them this morning.

I was not entirely clear what discipline this person was, the type of scan you had and when it took place. Without this information it will have made it more difficult for the managers to assess what happened.

I can understand that you are keen to get feedback on this and I assure you we will do so. While it will not change your experience it may help prevent a similar experience for someone else.

Kind regards

Eunice

Dear danderson1,

The CT staff acknowledge that the situation you describe must have been extremely upsetting and certainly would not wish this to happen to any other patient. Your experience has been discussed at the team meeting and lessons will be learned.

Representatives from the department have offered to meet with you to discuss your concerns and to reassure you that they are taking this issue seriously.

Please phone 01292 614242 and ask to be connected to the Superintendent Radiographer to arrange a mutually suitable time to meet.

Kind regards

Stella Masterton
