"Repeated change of follow-up appointment following inpatient admission"

About: University Hospital Monklands / General Surgery (Wards 4 & 7)

(as the patient),

I was admitted to Monklands hospital with severe abdominal pain and vomiting in December 2013 and spent 7 days as an inpatient for investigation.

Following this, I was given appointments for CT scan and Endoscopy + Biopsy, and an appointment to meet my Consultant, for April 2014, to discuss long term care following these investigations.

I was also advised to make an appointment with my GP following endoscopy for PPI prescription until I returned for follow-up with my Consultant.

Regrettably, the date of this 'Consultant follow-up appointment' was changed at short notice to July 2014, owing to "unforeseen circumstances".

Given the further 2 month delay, I made another appointment with my GP to hopefully discuss the results of my Endoscopy and Biopsy. I was informed that all results would go straight to the hospital and my GP could therefore not enlighten me with regards my results.

To my distress, my 'Consultant follow-up appointment' was again changed to September 2014, again owing to "unforeseen circumstances". I then contacted the patient management department to discuss why my appointment had yet again been changed, only to be told that Consultants were needed elsewhere. Two days after my discussion with the patient management team, I received another letter informing me that my 'Consultant follow-up appointment' was now changed to November 2014, eight months after my initial appointment, for the third time owing to "unforeseen circumstances".

I have yet to be contacted by anyone to discuss my results or plan any management. I am concerned by this lack of follow-up, worried about what my results may show, and distressed by the constant seeming lack of patient-centred care. I remain symptomatic and my appetite remains poor, which is having an negative impact on my day-to-day activities. I hope that this lack of follow-up can be remedied promptly.

Dear EG1961

Thank you for taking the time to post your concerns regarding the changes to your follow-up outpatient appointment. I am very sorry that this has been your experience and this is certainly not the standard of person-centred care we aspire to.

I can fully appreciate after a 7-day inpatient stay, further outpatient investigations and remaining symptomatic you are anxious to know the results and your ongoing care plan.

I would appreciate you contacting my colleague, Leigh McLeary on telephone number 01236 713065 and give your personal details, I will ensure your situation is investigated.

kind regards

Ruth
