"Getting an appointment"

About: Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital

I would like to express my disgust at the way i am being treated by the NHS. I have had a problem with my shoulder for many months. I went to my doctor in January who referred me to the West Sussex MATT. Disappointingly I had to wait 2 months for an appointment but accepted that and saw them on 27th March. The consultation lasted about 15 minutes and concluded that I needed a CT scan which the doctor had already indicated. A made a follow up appointment with her on 23rd May - again I was disappointed that it would be a 2 month wait but had to accept it. In the meantime I also expected to receive notification of an appointment for a scan. I have heard nothing. I phoned a couple of times to be told I would receive a letter for me to make an appointment - note not an appointment but a letter to make one. Over 6 weeks have gone by and I have still heard nothing. My appointment with them to review the scan results is now just over a week away and I will no doubt have to cancel it as I will not have had a scan. This is disgusting treatment. My wife is dying of terminal cancer and has many appointments in London so I cannot guarantee that the appointment I do eventually receive will be suitable as I have to accompany her and her needs are greater than mine. That will introduce further delays. How can you run a system where you have to wait over 6 weeks just to arrange an appointment. Given that you have a diary, an appointment could have been made for me back on the date of my last visit on 27th March - even if it was 8 weeks away. There is no excuse not to be able to give a date for an appointment. I have never heard of anywhere else where you wait to queue to get an appointment. I am documenting all of this together with any replies I receive so that I can make an official complaint later on. I will certainly inform the press and my MP too. The NHS needs to start treating people fairly and like human beings.

I'm sorry to read your account of your experiences and will look to find out what might have happened and which NHS organisation is responsible for this service. I'll provide an update here as soon as possible.

I’m sorry to read about this person’s experience of our service and am sorry that the wait was outside of our maximum expected wait of 6 weeks.

I can’t comment on the delay for the CT scan as this is provided by another organisation.

But I would like to speak directly with the person about his poor experience of NHS services and would be pleased to hear from him on 01243 623811.

Pam Margrave

Deputy Head of Rehabilitation and AHP Services
