"Appaling nursing care on wards, particually on AMU..."

I have been under Stanmore's care since 2009. I have been admitted many times for follow up surgery (I am currently in an Ilizarov Frame and have had a Taylor Spatial Frame in the past) & infection problems. The surgical teams & clinical nurse specialists, in my opinion, are second to none. Sadly this is not the case with ward staff. The last time I was admitted in March 2014 with an acute infection, I was placed in a room on Angus McKinnon Unit. I was prescribed IV antibiotics & a cannula was fitted. I was told that I would have a named nurse to take care of me who duly introduced themselves and that was the last I saw of them for the duration of my stay. I was in a room on the unit and was basically forgotten until it was time to administer antibiotics. Trying to get attention for any problems was a complete waste of time. Average waiting time for a response to calls using the bedside call system was 30-45 mins. Sleep was all but impossible at night due to the noise made by the night shift, doors allowed to slam closed and the shouting when they "talk" to each other or patients. The laughing, my God, the laughing (what's so funny is what I'd like to know!) Urine bottles were left un-emptied for hours on end, I couldn't eat the inedible food and didn't eat for 3 days until my wife bought me food from home. Nursing staff didn't notice or care that I hadn't eaten for this period once I pointed it out. I was abruptly told: "You could always have a salad" The room was not even swept or mopped and I had to clean the sink in my room myself (not an easy feat when you're supposed to be non weight bearing and have a cannula fitted!) the bin was not emptied once despite containing contaminated clinical waste. Just what you need with an acute infection. After 5 days of this neglect and the breaking of the cannula tube, due to having to fend for myself for 5 days, I had reached the end of my tether and left. I didn't discharge myself, I just left. The next day a police officer called at my home & told me staff were concerned that I just left, I laughed out loud! I'm surprised they noticed. I went to WGH as a day patient to have the broken part of the cannula removed. My surgeon, who is brilliant, tells me the Ilizarov treatment is going well but I don't know how it will be removed as I refuse to return to this hospital as an in patient. In any event I will never go to AMU again. If you are told you are going to this ward be afraid, be very afraid. I have cancelled my out patient appointments and am reluctantly seeking referral for treatment elsewhere. It is a shame that a few poor nurses should be allowed to destroy this hospitals universal reputation as a centre of excellence.
