"long wait for surgery and cancellation"

About: University Hospital (Coventry)

after badly injuring my 5 digits on my left hand via a circular saw Tuesday 6th May 0915 I went to A & E Warwick Hospital where I was assessed and dressed accordingly. I was told that I needed plastic surgery for possible nerve damage and would therefore need to go to University hospital Coventry Wednesday for 8am and to fast ready for surgery. After a 3 hr wait I was sent home as the op was cancelled and to return Thursday for the same. After fasting from 18.00 hrs Wednesday I am waiting, waiting, waiting finally I'm taken to a room (a bed found for me) told to gown up obs done and then waiting waiting waitng, It was 18.00hrs on Thursday that i was told i could now eat as the op was now cancelled, but not to go home as I would loose my bed. Today 9th May 16.30hrs gowned up fasted very thirsty still waiting waiting waiting, not knowing what is happening. What is wrong with the NHS, communication would be wonderful!

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience at University Hospital, Coventry in May 2014. After seeing your posting it was clear that you were still in the hospital so I went to the ward to understand why there was a delay. After speaking with the ward staff I escalated your issue to the Group Manager and understand that he, along with one of the doctors, came to see you shortly after with an explanation and apology. They informed you that the cancellation was due to other emergencies taking a clinical priority and you accepted this. They then let you know that your operation would be a priority the following day (Saturday) and they have contacted me to let me know that the operation did indeed take place as planned. I apologise if details of potential delays were not made clear to your beforehand and agree that better communication would have been useful under the circumstances. I believe that the Group Manager explained that plans for a second emergency theatre have now been approved which should minimise such occurrences taking place in the future.
