I have just returned from spending 4 hours in A&E. My son (8) dislocated his finger and I thought that I should go and get it checked out. I assumed that this hospital would have a separate A&E for pediatric's, but apparently this was closed due to staff being off sick - really? We then had to wait for 1 1/2 hours to see a nurse who said that we should get my son's finger x-rayed. We then waited a further 2 hours. We were eventually seen a doctor who was clearly over-worked and was working alone with no nurse back-up. We got an x-ray which was inconclusive and was told we needed to go to the fracture clinic. I asked the initial nurse if it would be better to come back in the morning, but she insisted that my son's finger was a funny shape and this needed seeing to immediately. Bearing this in mind, all we came back with was a wrapped up finger and an appointment for 6 days time....was this worth the 3 hour wait? To top it all off we then could not get out of the car park, due to the security guard being needed for a violent patient elsewhere. Apparently Epsom only have 2 security guards for the whole hospital (this is what the security guard that was sitting in an office somewhere told me.). I truly terrible experience.
