"I had an orthopaedic out patient ..."

About: St Mark's Hospital (Maidenhead)

(as the patient),

What I liked

I had an orthopaedic out patient appointment. I found the staff to be welcoming and helpful. They take infection control seriously and expect patients to use the hand gel. The X-Ray Department waiting area was full - it was an icey morning which produced lots of fractures. I only had a 20 minute wait for my X-Rays. The Radiologist was kind and helpful. The Clinic nurse was very efficient and gave good explanations about what would happen.

The Consultant showed me what was wrong with my joint on the X-Rays and explained everything clearly, including the operation I would need and the recovery. The nurse spent a couple of minutes with me afterwards explaining what would happen next. I was very impressed. It was a much more personal experience than going to a larger hospital, and I would choose to go there again. I have been to St Marks before, for X-Rays and DEXA scans, and have always had a good experience. Well done to all the staff.

What could be improved

I think that the hospital has started taking minor injuries recently, and they are a bit short of space for the work going on, especially in the X-Ray waiting area. People in wheel chairs take up a lot of floor space.
