"My Dad"

About: Royal Preston Hospital

My dad had severe Copd and was coming to end of life, he had been in RPH twice before and the care was mixed, some excellant nurses and so not so good. On 3/12/14 he was admitted with severe breathing difficulty and was panicking, he was admited into the resus unit and the care he re,cd there was fine, we went through all questions we needed to and the doctor was awareof the stage we were at and that nothing more could be done for my dad other than to make him confortable. He was then transferred to A & E were w were put in a cubicle and left for over 4 hours, in all this time staff onl came in once to take dads blood and then to tell us he would be moving onto a ward? When it came to move my dad he was sent to the medical assessment unit? why when he was end of life we do not know, to add insult to injury when we go on the ward we were told there were,nt actually any beds & we left standing on a corridor. They then decided as my dad needed 24/7 oxygen that they needed somewhere to plug his oxygen in and he was pushed in a small waiting area with 5 other patients/visitors watching him fighting for breath and basically dying. My dad then started to decline rapidly when we went to get a nurse and she brought a doctor, we were told my dad was having a panick attack! and then he was asked if he smoked! (he does,nt but at end of life does it really matter if he smokes or not) my dad was yellow, his fingers were blue and his lips black and yet no-one seem to grasp the severity of the situation, even though they had been told in a phone call from a&e? Astounding? They then rushed my dad down the corridor but unfortunately he basically died on the trolley in the corridor. They did put him in a bay so we could sit with him (someone had been wheeled out of the bay and put round the corner for this to happen!) but too little too late in my opinion. so yes RPH failed my dad massively and my familys lasting memories are not what they should have been and that can never be changed and instead of being made comfortable my father suffered in a way no-one should ever have to..
