"A&E at the Princess Royal University Hospital for 2 members of my family"

About: Princess Royal University Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

My husband dropped a kettle of newly boiled water over his arm and leg. I managed to get water soaked towels over him and called an ambulance. The paramedic put burns packs on him and took him in. We had to wait 6 hours and never got into a cubicle as they were so busy. No adequate pain relief and despite reporting loss of feeling in the arm, it was dressed and we were discharged. No after care or told how to look after the burns.

My mother in law then had to go to A&E as she couldn't breathe. The initial doctor took her through, took bloods, x rays and put her on a nebulizer. The next doctor came in, removed the angular. Basically said the hospital couldn't do anything and that there was no need for bloods or x rays and that she should see her after the bank holiday weekend. She is struggling to breathe and going thorough a bottle of banking to cope a day. The doctor didn't seem to care and said she needed to do whatever it took to maintain herself until she saw the GP.

The department seems overcome with patients and all the doctors seem to want to do is discharge patients.

Please would you allow us the opportunity to investigate both your concerns about the attendances of your husband and mother in law so that we can offer some explanation/apology for their experience. Emergency departments are very busy at the current time but decisions to discharge patients should of course be undertaken after a full assessment has been undertaken and follow up care arranged if further wound dressings are required.
