"how did I survive"

About: Colchester General Hospital

This review covers a three year period and unfortunately shows little inprovrment overall My last stay begining 21st April 2014 due to chest pains on entry began very poorly in the A & E general area, but care elevated tremendously on being moved to resuss the consultant she was brilliant. Being transfer to the Medical team on admittance saw a dramatic decline in care (Carry on Doctor) junior doctors and some nursing staff on the EAU ward unable to communicate adequately.I was not informed that extra pain relief was availible by the Doctor consquently Nursing staff administered four hourly medication despite me having bouts of severe pain and requesting pain relief. Seen by four Consultants the 2nd wanted to discharge me straight away even though i was under investigation for heart problems and awaiting results of tests. Other consultants gave me and their team markedly different diagnosis and medicating regimes. Even a junior Doctor overiding a Consultants Heart prescriptions some hours ealier To sum up there is total disfunction between each of the consultants teams. after being admitted no doctor involved me in my treatment plan they talked at me and over me but not to me. Poor comunication skills of both Doctors and Nursing not only with patients more importantly between the medical staff themselves made me feel extremely vunerable. Staffing one night for the male section of the ward consisted of one registered Nurse and a helper niether had good communication skills.

I apologise you’ve not had a good patient experience. We try really hard to improve our services based on the comments we receive from our patients, their relatives or carers. We would like the opportunity to discuss your experiences more fully and to apologise in person. If you are willing I would appreciate it if I could ask the matron to contact you. Could you email me, using the reference “xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx”, please? Many thanks Paul Searle, Head of Communications Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust info@colchesterhospital.nhs.uk
