About: Wansbeck Hospital

A close relative has been in this hospital for the last 15days waiting for a transfer to Freeman hospital for important tests. During this time his ward has been quarantined twice (yes twice) due to the norovirus bug which my relative caught within 10hours of arriving on the ward and his transfer delayed due to the freeman not wanting the bug transferring to them. This is unacceptable and I see only cdiff and MRSA is recorded. There is now a huge backlog of patients waiting to be transferred. This had got to be the worst hospital I have ever visited.

Dear Sir/Madam Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I am so sorry that your relative's admission unfortunately coincided with an outbreak of norovirus on the ward, and that this has delayed her transfer to the Freeman. I can imagine this delay feels incredibly frustrating but I hope you understand why it is essential to follow our infection control policies and procedures to prevent the risk of further spread of the virus. I have spoken to the Matron for the ward today and she has confirmed that the ward was closed for a total of 8 days. When the ward reopened there were 5 patients who waiting for a transfer to another hospital, 3 of those patients had dates for transfer within 24 hours. All the beds on the ward have remained open since 25/04 and we currently have 5 patients awaiting for a transfer. As soon as the Freeman hospital is able accept those patients, they will be transferred. Apologies again for the impact that this has clearly had on your relative's experience of care and for any additional frustration and distress caused to you as a family member .
