"Appalling care and complete lack of respect"

About: Eastbourne District General Hospital

Totally shocked and disgusted at the complete lack of respect and care shown to my Father during his stay on Seaford 3 Ward in March and again in April 2014. During 14 days as an inpatient he was never showered or bathed despite several promises that the staff would do so. Despite him being unable to properly wash himself he was left with a bowl and flannel to do his best and having been discharged we have found bed sores which the staff did not notice or treat and other problems associated with not washing too unpleasant to mention here. Why oh why is the shower on the Ward not working after two months or more? We were told the patient could not be showered on another ward due to the risk of cross infection but surely personal cleanliness should take priority? The family have had to wash his hair by taking him to the bathroom and washing him over a sink. Not acceptable. Discharging him was a joke. He waited all day to be sent home in which time he was not given any of his medication. On arrival home at 7.30pm one of the drugs was missing completely. Seaford 3 should not be used for patients with long term requirements. It is an Admittance Ward and should be used as such. Do not leave longer term patients there to suffer. The nurses are all caught up admitting and discharging short term patients and cannot care for the terminally ill. The noise levels are unacceptable and do not allow patients to rest. I am very unhappy. I was considering moving home to Eastbourne but would never ever want to be under the care of the EDGH so will now seriously reconsider my options.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your father’s experience of Seaford 3 ward at Eastbourne District General Hospital. We are deeply concerned and saddened to hear about the poor standard of care you describe and agree that your fathers experience was not acceptable. We would like to assure you that all comments are taken seriously and acted upon as part of our ongoing commitment to improving patient experience, and with this in mind, your posting was immediately forwarded to the Ward Manager and the Matron responsible for Seaford 3 ward for an urgent investigation and response. The Director of Nursing has also been informed and will be monitoring the outcomes arising from your feedback. The Ward Manager and Matron would welcome the opportunity to discuss your fathers experience with you in more detail so that they can gather further information and address the issues promptly and effectively. May we re-assure you that we have taken immediate action to inspect the shower and put measures in place to resolve the issue. We would therefore urge you to make contact as soon as possible. You can make contact with the Ward Manager or Matron via the ward, alternatively the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) team would be pleased to make the necessary arrangements.
