"Maternity Triage"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

I am a senior student midwife at a different trust and attended the maternity triage unit with my friend who is 33 weeks pregnant. She was having a test which checked how likely it was that she would go into premature labour. Out of the four members of staff she encountered, only one introduced themselves to her which was a doctor. The rest of them did not introduce themselves by name or role. After having her urine tested we were told to wait in the waiting room. After half an hour a different midwife came to apologise that the doctor wasn't ready yet. When the doctor was finally apparently ready the midwife took us in to a room and realised my friends observations hadn't been done so she did those. In the treatment room my friend was told the name of the test and that she would be having an internal exam. They didn't explain what the test was for, how accurate the results were or what to look for after inc. pv bleeding. Before they carried out the test they did not listen to the fetal heart and after the test it was ten minutes after that they finally listened to the fetal heart.. My friend told the staff that she was still experiencing the pain, which they disregarded and proceeded to write in her notes that the pain had resolved which was incorrect. When she was ready to be discharged the midwife did not tell her what to do if the pain persisted or give her any advice. I was disgusted by the care and treatment given and would not recommend the maternity services to any family or friend. I sincerely hope something is done to improve these services, they certainly need it.

I'm really sorry to hear that your friend had such a poor experience when attending our department. We endeavour to provide excellent patient centred care and treat concerns and complaints very seriously. I am extremely keen to listen to your friends concerns so that we can prevent this situation from occurring again. I would ask that you encourage her to contact me directly so that I can discuss this with her in more detail.
