We drove to A & E rather than take up emergency crew tme, the waiting room had more relatives taking up seats than patients, I reported my severed trhumb on my right hand while my wife parked up & that I was Right handed, but I was still unsypatheticly given a form to fill in before I left! Then had to stand for 40 minutes. security did not take control of an unruly patient swearing all the time, although there were children present, he was sitting in a wheel chair unable to stand, but eventually stood & walked out! My severed thumb was dressed with LINT instead of Gauze causing it to stick on examination by a doctor and bleed more! The piece of thumb I saved & packed in ice by this time had melted, was placed in a bag by a doctor who was told to refresh the ice, but when my wife asked why she was standing in the cubicle looking bewildered, said it was difficult to get ice at this time of day, so put it in the fridge instead the plastic surgon asked what sort of treatment I would Like, Dressing or Surgery---let the thumb heal over OR shorten the bone & stich, as the piece in the fridge was unlikely to take. (I though he was the expert, & supposed to decide!) I said dress it, which as I was to learn from a plastic surgon in the Hand Clinic later was correct, & it would never, never be advised to shorten the bone on a thumb as it would severely impede the use of the hand, because the thumb is responsible for 50% of the hands use. P.S. The doctor in the hand clinic was superb & knew his craft, unlike those in A & E.
"A & E. Rubbish! I should have treated my own..."
