"Poor experience of elderly care at Royal infirmary "

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 26, 27, 61 & 62 ) Lightburn Hospital / Elderly Care

(as a relative),

My grandmother recently went into the Royal after a hip fracture. She had to get plates inserted in 3 sites and was released less than a week later, which we all thought was far too soon. 2 days later, she ended up back in hospital after banging her head (she has dementia, so this complicates any trauma). During her stay she got progressively worse.

She was shifted from ward to ward, where we faced a lot of unhelpful and unfriendly nursing staff, many of whom seemed to have no consideration for her elderly husband and bypassed him with information. Basically, we feel her care was a joke.

She was put into an elderly ward, where she would be agitated and get no attention from the nurses and when we asked for help they took on average 20 minutes to appear. I understand they have a lot of work to do, but if a patient is in the state my gran is, that should be more of a priority than when your tea break is.

My gran quickly became unconscious and the staff never really explained how that happened. She was then shipped off to Lightburn for "rehabilitation" that we were informed would not happen!

The staff at Lightburn were much better, the staff nurse was a delight to speak to. She kept us fully informed, which was a pleasant change from the royal. My gran is now back at her care home, as they couldn't do anything else for her.
