"Gall bladder keyhole surgery"

About: Northampton General Hospital (Acute) / General surgery

(as the patient),

I had keyhole surgery for removal of gall bladder at Northampton General Hospital 3 weeks ago, after nearly 6 months of waiting. On the day of the op. the time I had been given by the surgeon was cancelled twice for 'political reaons' (his words) and I was transfered onto the emergency list eventually having the operation late in the day. The long time of waiting with no food or drink allowed, and little information which left me feeling isolated and vulnerable.

Following the operation I went to Collingtree ward where the staff were excellent, and the food O.K. Following discharge 2 days later I had problems with a wound infection, dealt with by my own G.P. practise.

I feel there should be some aftercare offered by the hospital, and more direct information about the procedures.

The day after the operation the surgeon who performed it did not visit me on the ward to discuss how it went.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments to us.

We would like to apologies for the cancellation of your surgery. The delay will have been done by either the surgeon or theatres because of the types of cases being done or emergency pressures .This does cause problems for the patient with regard to feeding once food or drink has been taken the operation cannot take place and further delays would take place

The reason for not seeing the Consultant before discharge is the whole purpose of Collingtree ward so that patients are not delayed waiting to see a Consultant prior to discharge. The Consultant will have given permission beforehand to say the patient is fit for nurse facilitated discharge.

Any specific instructions are also written so that they can be passed on. The nursing staff will have given the relevant information and leaflets when you were leaving the ward according to the type of surgery you had. you will also have been told that you were welcome to contact the ward if you had any questions.

We apologise if the care and treatment did not reach your expectations and will review how the situation can be improved.
