"gallstones, pancreatitis unexpected long stay,..."

About: The Whittington Hospital

After 6 hours of intense abdominal and back pain and severe vomiting I gave in and called an ambulance at around 2am which quickly took me to the A&E department of The Whittington hospital. After a short wait I was taken into a room and examined, the doctors could tell i was in bad pain and gave me painkillers and morphine whilst they did tests to see what the problem was. After a few hours i was given a bed and told I would have to stay the night for monitoring. The next day i was sent for an x-ray and ultrasound and they told me I had allot of gallstones and acute pancreatitis also stones were blocking my bile pipe causing jaundice. My blood pressure kept spiking so I had to be monitored for a few days before having a procedure where a camera is put down the throat and something used to move the stones, after that i was monitored again because they explained in some cases pancreatitis can be fatal so they wanted to take every precaution. They changed the antibiotics they had been given me to a different sort which seemed to balance me out. All together over around 14 days I was given 2 x-rays an ultrasound a full MRI scan and loads of blood tests, IV drips, oxygen, painkillers, morphine, I can honestly say I was amazed by how efficient , professional, caring and respectful all the doctors, nurses, students and food staff were. This was my first ever admission to a hospital at the age of 25 so all these new things could have made me quite nervous but every person i came in to contact with made me feel at ease. On my 15 day in the hospital they operated and removed my gallbladder and within 2 days I felt great and well enough to leave, I was given a large bag of bandages and dressings and a ton of meds, which the nurse fully explained how to use I was also given 2 letters explaining everything that had happened and how they responded to it, one for me and the other for my GP. Its now a week since the op and all is healing well and I just wanted to take a minute to thank all the people that were so good to me. when your in a lot of pain you are vulnerable and uncomfortable but I really don't think I could have received better care.
