I gave birth to my first child in April 2014 in the labour ward and found the experience to be empowering and can not speak more highly of the midwifery team. My labour did not go entirely to plan with my waters breaking at 36 weeks and an induction being required however my husband and I were kept involved in the process and we were involved in every decision that was made. Every member of staff introduced themselves to us and we found them to be very professional and friendly. I felt confident to place my trust in all of the midwives and felt that all of my preferences as to my labour were listened to, respected and incorporated, where possible. The labour ward was relatively quiet during my labour, which may not be everyone's experience but regardless at no point were we rushed following delivery and my husband was actively involved in skin to skin with our son, which was an amazing bonding experience for him. I had a private room on the Joan Broker Ward but again found all of the team to be professional, approachable and caring. I was required to stay in hospital for 48 hours post delivery and was completely supported by the team including in my choice to breastfeed. The advice and guidance I received in these two days played a significant part in my being able to continue with breast feeding. In addition to the labour team I also used the early pregnancy unit, received a reassurance scan and attended the medical assessment unit. All members of staff we encountered were compassionate and professional and we felt supported and understood. I would strongly recommend the maternity team to anyone having a baby.
