"great midwife's on delivery"

About: Whiston Hospital

I had my baby at this hospital last month. The delivery midwifes and doctor were amazing especially after me losing alot of blood and my baby being stuck. The only thing that lets the maternity department down is the breastfeeding team. As i had a difficult birth and lost alot of blood. I did want to breastfeed my baby. But my baby wasnt latching on. As i didn't know at this the time because it is my first child. but my breast were not producing any milk because of the loss of blood at birth. My baby was also born with jaundice and he was also dehydrated because my breasts had no milk. His jaundice and dehydration would have been reduced if i was advised to express my milk into a bottle for my baby. Therefore i was under alot of pressure to breastfeed my baby when my body was just to tired. They made me feel very guilty and depressed. As now it has resulted in me not being close to my baby for this reason and i do blame the breastfeeding team for this. The breastfeeding team didn't even recommend me to express my milk and bottle feed that way. As now i just ended up putting it into a bottle for my baby anyway. They are so hooked on baby being on the breast when really it doesn't matter how your baby gets your milk. Just as long as he gets your milk. The breastfeeding team think they can bully mums to breast feed and they dont realise they cannot force people to do what they dont want to do. They should enforce a bottle feeding group. And to give this review a nice ending i will be writing to the breastfeeding team with a letter. Thank you for reading peeps.

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay and care at Whiston Hospital maternity unit. Whilst I am pleased to hear about the good treatment she received and the positive experience of the ward . I am sorry that her experience was not all together positive.

If you contact the Patient Experience Team on 0151 430 1376 we would be happy to discuss this with you, in the meantime I will relay your comments back to the managers of both wards.
