"Long wait in A&E with no checks on well being"

About: Southampton General Hospital

I was taken to A&E by ambulance last week with an arm injury from a fall on my way home from work. It was early evening, mid-week. I then waited four and a half hours to be examined. I understand there were more urgent cases requiring attention but during this time there were no checks on my well being. I had no line of sight to anyone else in the hospital. I was only given water and pain relief when I called out to people attending the next bed. I advised the nurse that I could not reach the water jug or the call button, but neither situation was remediated. To be left alone, unseen and in considerable pain for a prolonged period with no indication of how long this may continue is quite distressing even for the well grounded. An occasional check or update on waiting times from an orderly would make a significant difference. Once I was examined the staff were considerate and efficient and my treatment was effective. I hope this feedback is useful in monitoring the service you offer.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback about your experience in the Emergency Department. It is always useful to receive feedback and this is shared with staff so that changes can be made as a result of what we learn from what patient's tell us. We were sorry to read of your experience and particularly that you were not offered pain relief and or kept informed about what was happening and can appreciate how distressing this can be. We do hope that you have made a good recovery from your injury.
