I returned home yesterday after only 2 nights on Shopland ward recovering from a hip replacement op. I was amazed at the dedication and devotion to duty of all the staff I encountered during my brief stay, from the surgeon to the cleaners. Nothing was too much trouble and I felt cared for and supported at all times. Thanks to this I was out of the hospital, mobile, equipped and with follow up info in a very short time. The staff on the wards on all shifts and at all levels were informed fully of what was needed for my care. I was so relieved as one hears such negative feedback from people at times, I was almost dreading my stay. So listen up if you are down for an op on Shopland ward. You can go in with confidence, you will be cared for and supported, But you must make an effort with your own recovery too, not just leave it to the staff and expect them to make all the pain go away and make you recover with no effort on your part! So thanks to all, with a special mention for the person who brings round the food and drink and went out of her way to help me with my vegan diet requirements, also for her great sense of humour! In my view this ward is a good example of how the NHS is supposed to work, lets hope Shopland ward and the orthopaedic team continue to thrive.
