"Discharged without treatment"

I was seen by an orthopaedic surgeon who verified I had torn my medial meniscus in my left knee and referred me for an MRI. I was told to wait 2 months, calling frequently in this time to find out what was going on. I was told that no appointment had been made for some time, then suddenly they notified me that I had missed an appointment 1 month later and was discharged (without ever being notified of the next appointment or the discharge). Since then my knee has deteriorated and I have been told to be referred via the GP again. I have asked for e-mail or phone confirmation and they have not been keen to accomodate this for next time. I am immensely dissatisfied with this treatment.
