"Poor Ward 16"

About: Freeman Hospital

Under-staffing problems admitted by nursing staff lead to them being run off their feet, exhausted and therefore not equipped to deal with patients need to a good standard. Domestic staff were very pleasant and friendly. Nurses and Doctors were unhelpful, rushed and out of their depth in this busy demanding ward!

Thank you for raising your concerns on NHS Choices. We would like to apologise to you that the standard of care provided did not meet your reasonable expectations. Ward 16 is an acute medical ward and is extremely busy with a high throughput of patients. We would like to reassure you that nurse staffing levels are continuously monitored and recent investment has been made. As such, the ward is not short-staffed but may have to deal with unexpected staffing issues such as short-term sickness – this should in no way have an effect on patient care and we are sorry that staff gave the impression that this was the case. It is always our highest priority to promote an environment that patients feel safe and cared for and again, we are sorry that you did not feel that this was achieved during your stay. Your kind comments about the Domestic Staff are acknowledged and very much appreciated. If you wish to discuss further, please do not hesitate to contact Matron Kennedy on 0191 2448613 or a member of our Patient Relations Team on 0191 2231382 who will do all that they can to address your concerns.
