"First class care on CLU for birth of first baby"

About: Leighton Hospital

I had my first baby, George, on October 6th 2013. After a straightforward pregnancy, I was induced at 2 weeks overdue. After 21 hours following induction my waters broke, 25 hours in labour followed with a variety of monitoring and interventions needed and the resulted in emergency forceps in theatre. Not the water birth I had planned. Throughout my whole labour I received first class care from a midwife and a trainee midwife. I could not find any fault in the care i reeived. The midwives had a fantastic, caring manner not only to me but to my mum and husband, making us all tea and toast. Midwives work long shifts with few opportunities for a break but I felt in safe hands throughout the whole experience. It was very clear that every decision and piece of advice given was in the best interests of me and my baby. I have had bad experiences in other areas of Leighton, A and E is a disaster with some doctors who barely speak English prescribing medication unsuitable for pregnant women! This could not be further away from the antenatal care and care I received in labour. My community midwife was also a diamond! My only comment was the care I received postnatally on the ward after delivery was a real let down, after the superb care on the labour ward, I felt deserted and alone at 3.30am with a new baby having just been stitched up for 3 hours. No one came to see if I was ok, I had to ask 4 times for help to go to the toilet (no.2) as I had a catheter in and was recovering from an epidural. If it wasn't for the assistance of the lady opposite I would have messed the bed :( very degrading. When I mentioned that breast feeding was sore I was told, well what do you expect, it will hurt. As a direct consequence I was desperate to get out of there and went home hours later, this was probably too early and left me struggling. I would not hesitate to return for future babies, if I have any more and cannot thank the midwives on the antenatal and labour ward enough.

I am very pleased to read such positive comments surrounding your pregnancy and birth experience. As the manager of the labour ward I will ensure that these comments are fed back to all the staff. We try hard to ensure that each woman receives the best outcome. It is unfortunate that you had some issues post-natally and I will pass your comments to the ward manager who would be willing to discuss these issues further should you wish to do so. If you would like to talk to us about your experiences, please contact the customer care team on 01270 612410. We very much look forward to seeing you again in future pregnancies. Denise Horne Labour ward Manager
