"Support for other parents feeling a bit down or having an off day"

About: Kirkby East Children's Centre

(as the patient),

I had my second child 8 months ago and with sleepless nights it can make me bit teary. I get fantastic support from Sure Start but it's got me thinking about support that other parents get if they are feeling a bit down or having an off day. I was wondering if there could be some kind of support group where mums, dads or guardians could go and know there's going to be someone that's feeling the same.

If you're suffering from baby blues, you don't always want to tell Sure Start staff in play group about how low you are feeling or have the confidence to admit you are feeling low. If there was a group where mums or dads could go and talk about how they feeling or have a good cry or even if it's just a hug, they could be told everything is going to be ok and they could realise they aren't on their own.

It affects the whole family when a parent is feeling quite low. This could be run by volunteers that have had low moods or suffered from post natal depression themselves. So it would be like a peer support group for parents that are suffering from baby blues or had couple of sleepless night or suffering with post natal depression. I do feel there's a lot of parents out there that may be feeling like this.

Thank you for sharing your experience and I am sorry it has taken a while to respond. It is good to know the team at Sure Start were able to give you the support you needed. I have asked the team in Kirkby to look into your suggestion as to group based support for those with low mood or post natal depression and to consider what is available in the community at present. You may be interested to know that we are rolling out a new scheme called the Perinatal Support Service that involves specially trained volunteers supporting mums who may be at risk of anxiety or depression before or after birth. Ashfield District will be working towards this over the coming year. I know other areas where this has been implemented support groups have been set up.

I will update you when progress has been made

Kind regards
