"They should experience what it is like to feel you are choking"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I decided before my gastroscopy that I wanted sedation, but I allowed the health care worker who saw me before the procedure to talk me out of it and convince me not to have it. That was a hideous mistake. The procedure was the worst experience of my life to date. I was traumatised for the rest of the day. Before any health care worker is allowed to talk people out of having sedation, they should themselves experience what it is like to have a tube down your throat and feel you are choking.

Dear Jannetta

We appreciate that you took the time to offer this feedback. Please know that because we take this so seriously I have already spoken with the unit Sister who wanted you to know

“’During admission to the endoscopy department we give patients the opportunity to discuss the benefits and draw backs of receiving sedation during their procedure. On signing your consent form you would have been told that you could withdraw your consent at any time before or during the procedure, and once discussed with the Endoscopist there is the possibility of having sedation if the criteria is met (I.e. someone to accompany you for 12 hours post procedure, not working/driving for 24 hours after).

Patient choice is something we take very seriously and this needs to be respected. I will ensure this is raised with all the unit staff at our meeting tomorrow and they are extra vigilant when explaining the options to all patients”

We want our patients to have the best experience possible with us and I am sorry that you feel that you were overly encouraged into having your gastroscopy without sedation and not well informed. We have obviously not attained the standard we set for ourselves and let you down. If you would like to discuss this any further please contact our PALS, on 01202 704886
