"My mother's experience after a fall"

About: Royal Shrewsbury Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

My mother was admitted to this hospital after a fall, she didn't hurt herself but she was diagnosed with a bladder infection, which caused the fall. She has now been in hospital for 9 weeks and things for her have gone from bad to worse since she was admitted.

She had pneumonia within a week, she was put on a catheter within days of being admitted (we suspect because they couldn't be bothered to assist her to the toilet). She is still on a catheter and is now doubly incontinent!

She is gluten intolerant and no matter how many times we have told the staff on various wards they have put her in, they still forget about this. She needs to drink plenty of fluids, which should be within reach of her, as she is now bed bound, but every time we visit her water is not close at hand. She is profoundly deaf without her hearing aids, again whenever we go in they are not within reach for her to put them on....

We have now been told that she is medically fit to go home. When she arrived she could walk unaided, she had a good appetite and she could look after her needs. Now she can't even get out of bed, she has no appetite and she is doubly incontinent. Furthermore we have had no discussion with her consultant, and when I asked for an appointment to see him I was told I needed to ring the main L&D hospital switchboard and make an appointment with his secretary.

There are many more things that I could list that have added to her problems, but these are just the main ones.

We are totally disgusted with this hospital.
