I was very nervous about my appointment but felt more at ease as soon as I entered the building. The downstairs doesn't feel like a hospital - it is spacious, very clean and impressively decorated. There was lots of space to relax and I could talk to my partner without being overheard. The calling system worked well. I had to wait a long time to see my consultant, but I had been warned of this in my appointment letter. When I was upstairs in the waiting room there was an emergency and several staff were required to help somebody who was very sick. It is a cancer hospital and circumstances like this are surely unavoidable and cannot be predicted. Thus, I did not mind having to wait. However, once I had seen the consultant I only had to wait a few minutes before being taken through to a radiologist. What stood out for me was the staff. Every member of staff was welcoming, upbeat, smiley, helpful and incredibly apologetic about the delays. This includes the receptionists, but particularly the nurses, my consultant and the radiologist. A facility like this with such fabulous staff is surely the NHS at its finest!
